Jessica and Rachel vow to keep in touch after graduating Brown. What ensues is a series of emails back and forth as the two of them discover what they actually want to do now that they are expected to be real adults.I absolutely loved this book. It really made me feel nostalgic, as their emails reminded me of my blockmates from college Fine Letters we would send each other every month relaying our own crazy postgraduate adventures. I literally couldn't put the book down and stayed up all night reading it...on a work night no less! The fun, humor and hilariousness of the emails have you smiling throughout the entire story. I even found myself reading aloud certain paragraphs to my boyfriend, as it was just to good not to share.
I would highly recommend this book.

I stopped reading this in public places because I kept laughing out loud and embarrassing myself. This is a great read for anyone who wants to feel nostalgic and laugh about the shenanigans of post-college adventures. I will now have potential new friends read this book and ask them if they found it as funny as I did as a litmus test for friendship. Thanks Rachel and Jess for helping me remember all the fun (and other emotions) of life during that time.
I really enjoyed reading this book told through weekly emails between friends. Keeping up with friends has become so difficult these days, and this was refreshing. So much of it captured how I felt in my early twenties about love, travel, and myself. I only wish I would have read it during my early twenties
As someone who just graduated last May, is living in NYC, and writes to her best friend daily ... I could not relate to this book more, it made me feel justified in all the confusion I've been feeling and it's incredible this is a real story (it feels like reading fiction) and you can see what ACTUALLY happened to these people not the other side (which for a new graduate who feels like she's walking blindly daily is a relief).
Loved it.
A perfect summer, pool side book. Easy to read and fun to look forward to every day! Perfect for me in my post-college graduation phase.
Definitely would recommend!
Loved this book! Funny, smart, well written, embarrassingly and sometimes heartbreakingly honest. It's a great balance between the authors' personal self-reflections/coming of age moments and simple, universal truths that make any reader feel validated for at some point asking themselves the same questions. The emails exchanged between these two adventurers are often meaty in length and content, but the voice and tone is always fresh, authentic and digestible; never prosaic or long-winded. This is a great read that inspired me to not only connect with my closest friends, but also go seek out an adventure!
So Jess discovers when she moves to Beijing upon graduating Brown. She is half Chinese, and her father spoke Mandarin as a child. Now she embarks on a study of the language and an adventure in a new world. Her best friend, Rachel, has moved to New York City to break into the art scene. The two of them write emails back and forth. They are the ripe, wistful plot if this clever little book. It is a bit of a guilty pleasure in that the subject is not a new one and the characters are not particularly fresh. Yet to these two girls, the adventure is clearly original and bears all the enticements of discovery. This enthusiasm leaks through and makes the book a little treat. I would give it three and a half stars. It has a certain charm reminds those of us who really are 45 or older how it all began.
I loved Graduates in Wonderland, and read it all in one sitting.
Two friends make a pact to write to each other regularly, through thick and thin. Through their intimate and revealing e-mails, you follow their stories as Jess ends up in Beijing and then Australia, while Rachel ends up in New York and then Paris, navigating the challenges of early adulthood with pluck, humour, and growing wisdom.
I laughed out loud many times. I felt my heart sinking many other times, during the more intense parts. I found myself emotionally invested in the story from beginning to end. Jessica and Rachel's voices - and the colourful characters they encounter - jump right off the page, and it's easy to get caught up with their (mis)adventures. And along the way, you'll get to see some fascinating places in their own right, through their eyes, whether the narrow alleyways of Beijing, the boulevards of Paris, or a dusty farm in the Australian countryside.
If you've ever wondered what you should do with your life after college, if you've ever learnt lessons from past flings or relationships and feel the wiser for it, if you've ever been glad to face life with a close friend to confide in, you'll enjoy this book.
