Pride, Prejudice, and Jasmin Field was a bit disappointing. I came into it expecting a light-hearted load of laughs but instead found myself reading Pride and Prejudice, the stale edition. While the story is meant to be derivative of Pride and Prejudice, the author took it too literally. There were also the matters of Wickham and body image. *Spoilers ahead* In this rendition of Pride and Prejudice, Wickham was an evil domestic abuser. This is totally out of line with his character. In the original Wickham was a narcissistic rake, but not a horrible person. Despite his faults Wickham would not have hit Lydia, it was not his style to do anything out right horrible. And secondly, the matter of body image. Throughout the book the author simultaneously laments how women's bodies are portrayed and body bashes. Jasmin is constantly noting ugly women while complaining when Harry Noble calls her "the Ugly Sister". She also talks about her best friend wanting to get into shape as a bad thing. Wanting to be a healthy weight, is not something to be criticized. But overall, it was an enjoyable book in some parts, even though in other parts I literally rolled my eyes.

Darling, funny and so worth the read! You will not be disappointed!
I love everything Jane Austen. I've read all of her books and have seen every filmed adaptation. I've also read some god-awful, incredibly boring sequels. This book is just meant to be light and frothy and entertaining and it was! It was such a fun read. It was a delightful updating of the original and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys Austen and also a light, fun read.
I am a huge fan of the real Pride and Prejudice; therefore, it's always nice to read a decent sequel or adaptation. This book was exactly that--decent--but that's as far as it went. It was so ridiculously close to the original novel that I find myself wondering if Ms. Nathan has ever had an original thought in her life. That said, it was still a cute book, and seeing as it was so close to the original storyline, I would be hard pressed to not enjoy it at least a little bit. If you're like me, always looking for books that are spin-offs of Jane Austen's, this book is worth a try!
I was initially very sceptical about reading a book based upon an established classic - I tend to avoid any type of re-writes, "based-upons" or sequels written by other than the original authors. However, I was delightfully surprised with "Pride, Prejudice and Jasmin Field". It was a little slow-going at first but I soon began to enjoy the paralleling stories of the real characters vs. the characters they were playing in a stage production of the original Jane Austen classic. Some people may find it somehow intellectually offensive for a writer to use such a format but I honestly found it to be a very entertaining and heart-warming read. The book has even prompted me to re-read the original, it having been close to 30 years since I have done so.
Melissa Nathan's update of P&P is fun to read. I loved Jasmin Field's spirit, one very much like Elizabeth Bennet's. There were parts, admittedly, which were "stretched" to fit the many twists and turns of P & P. Yet, Ms. Nathan achieves this in a very witty novel. Her explanation of how Darcy is feeling when he dances with Elizabeth is one of the best I have ever read. She truly captures the pain Darcy experiences during this time in the original novel. Having Jasmin and Harry act out the part and explain what they hoped to achieve in the scene was like reading an annotated version of the original. See pp. 145-146 to see what I mean. Also, some of the underlying "feminism" concepts are addressed. On page 52 when Jasmin reiterates what it means to be a woman in the modern world, I could hear Elizabeth Bennet checking off her list in Regency England. You will enjoy this adaptation.
Because Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is one of my very favorite books, I was both excited and skeptical about Melissa Nathan's debut novel -- wanting it to be good, but not wanting to set my expectations too high.
I was pleased to find the style and the contemporary retelling worked well. The author has a quiet humor that works nicely, and the characters were interesting. The Darcy-update, actor Harry Noble, is a likeable and compelling lead; the female protagonist, Jasmin 'Jazz' Field is also nicely written. The book is not flawless. While Austen was always consistent in her POV -- we consistently saw and heard and thought the same things Elizabeth Bennett saw and heard and thought -- the text here is sometimes jarring in its change of perspective, even between paragraphs. The occasional cussing is also disconcerting. There are some clumsy, and unnecessary, contrivances to make the story mirror Austen's exactly.
Despite those problems, I enjoyed the book very much and was excited when the protagonists finally 'found' each other, just as I am each time I re-read the original.
Nathan is a gifted writer, and I will definitely read her next book.
